President Donald Trump weighed in on the result of the New York City Democratic primary for mayor, calling likely winner and socialist Zohran Mamdani “a 100% Communist Lunatic.”
Trump said Democrats “crossed the line” by voting to make him the nominee on Tuesday night. The final ranked choice result in the race won’t be available until next Tuesday, though former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani’s chief rival, has conceded.
“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!”
Mamdani appeared highly likely to win the race over Cuomo, leading 43.5% to 36.4% in the first round with 93% of the votes counted. He will likely receive more support through the ranked choice process to exceed the 50% needed to win.
The assemblyman has drawn controversy with his liberal plans, including freezing the city’s rent, free buses and child care, and government-run grocery stores. Mamdani also expressed anti-Israel views and refused to condemn the “globalize the intifada” phrase that’s associated with violence against Jewish people.
In a follow-up post, Trump suggested Reps. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) should run in 2028 as president and vice president, respectively: “I have an idea for the Democrats to bring them back into ‘play.’ After years of being left out in the cold, including suffering one of the Greatest Losses in History, the 2024 Presidential Election, the Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate, Jasmine Crockett, for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three High Level Members of the Cabinet — Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!”
Republicans widely condemned Mamdani’s win on Tuesday night. Vice President JD Vance seemed to mock Democrats for electing Mamdani. “Congratulations to the new leader of the Democratic Party [Zohran Mamdani],” he posted on Bluesky.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) used Mamdani’s election to boost her possible gubernatorial campaign.
“Hochul is the leader of the NY Democrat Party and fully embraced the antisemitic, Communist nominee. She owns this catastrophe,” she wrote on X.
Trump is originally from Queens, New York, a portion of which Mamdani represents.
Trump blasted Ocasio-Cortez for calling for his impeachment earlier this week. He called her “stupid” and one of the “dumbest people in Congress.”

Ocasio-Cortez fired back, saying she was a “Bronx girl” and not from Queens. “Mr. President, don’t take your anger out on me — I’m just a silly girl,” the congresswoman responded Tuesday.
“Take it out on whoever convinced you to betray the American people and our Constitution by illegally bombing Iran and dragging us into war,” she said.
