Law firm sues Hunter Biden over $50,000 in unpaid legal fees

The law firm that represented Hunter Biden in two federal trials sued him on Monday, alleging he failed to pay at least $50,000 in legal fees.

Winston & Strawn recently filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, arguing Biden’s failure to pay despite the law firm’s repeated requests amounts to a breach of contract. He owes upward of $50,000 as of April 30, the court filing notes.

“Although a portion of those fees have been paid, Mr. Biden presently owes [Winston & Strawn] substantially in excess of $50,000 in fees and interest that are due and payable,” the complaint states.

“This action is brought to enforce [Winston and Strawn’s] contract rights against Mr. Biden through judgment for the amount due, and lien on all Mr. Biden’s assets,” it continues.

The lawsuit contained a copy of the engagement contract agreed upon by the law firm and its client.

Biden previously paid his lawyers between March 2023 and October 2024, when his federal cases were still active.

Former President Joe Biden pardoned his son in December after Hunter Biden faced a conviction on three felony gun charges in Delaware and pleaded guilty to all nine charges in his tax evasion case in California. The pardon came weeks before the senior Biden left the White House.

While he is no longer subject to federal charges, Hunter Biden found himself mired in millions of dollars in debt and without a home following the pardon. In March, he pleaded with a federal judge to dismiss his own lawsuit against former Trump aide Garrett Ziegler because he didn’t have the money to continue litigating the case.

The first son previously made a living off of his abstract paintings, earning nearly $1.5 million for a few years. Hunter Biden said he has only sold one piece of art for $36,000 since December 2023. Before, he sold 27 pieces of art at an average price of nearly $54,500.

Abbe Lowell served as the younger Biden’s primary lawyer at Winston & Strawn. Lowell left the law firm earlier this year to launch his own. Lowell & Associates specializes in defending former government officials targeted by the Trump administration, according to Reuters.

The civil case brought by Winston & Strawn has an initial court hearing scheduled for Sept. 19.
