California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton blasted Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) for avoiding any change to any of the “moderate” views he proposed on his podcast.
Hilton announced his campaign as the second Republican candidate in April, two months after Newsom launched This is Gavin Newsom. The podcast has hosted MAGA leaders such as Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon. Across various episodes, Newsom came out against transgender athletes in women’s sports, calling it “deeply unfair,” and described the anti-police protests of 2020 as “lunacy.”
“Gavin Newsom has completely lost the plot. He doesn’t know what he is doing,” Hilton said Tuesday on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo. “Like a few months ago, he was all about trying to pretend that he is moderate, of course, he is not. He didn’t do anything about any of the issues that he talked about, whether that’s biological man in girls sports or anything else.”
Hilton referred to California allowing a 16-year-old transgender athlete to compete in the state’s high school track and field finals last month. Following the backlash, the California Interscholastic Federation invited more girls to compete.

Newsom is a year away from reaching his two-term limit after he survived a recall election in 2021. Following the fires in Southern California, Newsom was served recall papers for the second time.
Hilton is running against former Democratic Rep. Katie Porter, fresh from a failed campaign in which she lost to Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
