Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) for the Michigan Senate race.
Stevens is one of several Democrats running to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) in the 2026 midterm election.
“Haley Stevens is a proven fighter for Michigan! I am proud to endorse her for the U.S. Senate,” Pelosi said in a statement. “From her time as Chief of Staff on the auto rescue task force to her work strengthening Michigan’s manufacturing industry in Congress, it’s clear Haley is well equipped to stand up to Donald Trump’s chaos, lower costs for our families and ensure every Michigander can thrive. Haley has delivered results for the American people as a Member of the House Democrats – and I know she will accomplish a great deal as the next Senator from the great state of Michigan.”
In a statement, Stevens said, “I am so proud to have Speaker Emerita Pelosi’s support in this race.”
“I’ve spent my life fighting for Michigan — from helping save 200,000 jobs during the auto rescue, to passing the CHIPS Act — bipartisan legislation to bring our semiconductor industry home — to always protecting Michiganders’ earned benefits. I look forward to working with Speaker Emerita Pelosi to stand up to the Trump-Musk chaos agenda, lower costs, and make sure every Michigander can get ahead in the Senate,” Stevens’ statement continued.
Pelosi and Stevens shared a moment together in 2020 after Stevens gave a fiery speech on the House floor, during which Stevens began shouting remarks and fighting with other Democrats. She was eventually ruled out of order, and had her microphone turned off.
Pelosi, then the House speaker, was seen smiling at Stevens after the incident and sat down next to her for a moment, according to CNN. It was one of several outbursts she has had during public events, leading to criticism from Republicans.
Pelosi is the first prominent Democrat to endorse Stevens’s candidacy. Stevens met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) earlier this month, according to CNN.
Other Democratic contenders in the race include state Sen. Mallory McMorrow and former Wayne County health director Abdul El-Sayed.

On the Republican side of the race, former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, who unsuccessfully ran for the Senate in 2024, announced another bid. Republican Tudor Dixon, who lost the 2022 gubernatorial race to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) by 10 points, said she is considering a run for Senate or governor.
The primary will be held in August 2026.
