A senior staffer for Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) was a victim of an armed carjacking on Friday in a Washington, D.C., neighborhood where many Capitol Hill staffers live.

The incident took place at the Harris Teeter in Navy Yard. Jacobs’s deputy chief of staff’s car, work laptop, phone, iPad, staff identification, and bag were stolen.

Two suspects were arrested Saturday following the incident, and two firearms were recovered. The suspects were 14- and 15-year-old males. The 15-year-old was charged with carjacking, and the 14-year-old was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Jacobs’s office did not comment on the incident.

Navy Yard, a popular neighborhood in D.C., has had many incidents in the last few months that residents have documented on an X account called NavyYardCrime.

Motor vehicle incidents are up 10% from last year, making them one of the only incidents that have worsened since 2024. Total violent crime is down 22%, whereas property crime is down only 2%.

There have been a handful of incidents involving people who work in politics in D.C. In 2023, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked at gunpoint near his home in Navy Yard. The congressman was not harmed, and his car was eventually returned. Also in 2023, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in her apartment building. Last year, former Trump administration official Michael Gill was shot in a carjacking spree. He later died due to his injuries.
