Alsobrooks calls for RFK Jr. to resign as HHS secretary

.

Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) on Saturday called for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to resign from his Cabinet post, blasting him as an “asinine” and “dangerous” Health and Human Services secretary.

The freshman senator made the announcement at a “SICK OF IT” event outside the National Institutes of Health headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.

“As of this Monday, I will be filing a Senate resolution and I am calling on Secretary Kennedy to resign. He must go. He ought to be fired,” Alsobrooks said.

Alsobrooks claimed Kennedy has “utterly failed” in his leadership at the top health agency in the United States, pointing to his lack of a medical background as well as his promotion of “quack” science and treatments and his stance on vaccines.

“I asked him at his hearing, do you have any medical training? The answer is no. Do you have any scientific background? The answer is no. He is unqualified to do the work that he is doing, but he spread lies and conspiracy theories about safe and effective vaccines, vaccines that literally prevent measles,” she said, referencing the measles outbreak in the U.S. that has reached 1,000 reported cases across the country.

The Maryland senator also slammed the workforce reductions at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which Kennedy has pursued as he aims to cut about a quarter of HHS’s workforce. Alsobrooks claimed these cuts are not about eliminating wasteful spending and prioritizing efficiency, but are to give tax cuts for billionaires.

“Are you sick of seeing them cut funding for research? And guess why they’re doing all of this? None of us are confused about it, and so they can have tax cuts for their billionaire friends. That’s what this is all about. It’s not about efficiency. The idea that any of this about efficiency is a bald faced lie,” she said.

Alsobrooks concluded by painting Kennedy as “in over his head” and reiterated her call for his resignation, with the crowd chanting, “He must go!”

“So we want him together to either resign or to be fired. We don’t care which one, but he must resign or he must be fired. We want him to be removed. He never had the qualifications, and he’s lost the confidence of the American people, and we want him to get out of there now. And I am going to keep up the pressure on this administration to uphold the oath that they swore to keep,” she added.

Alsobrooks, who formerly served as county executive of Prince George’s County, became Maryland’s first U.S. black senator last November after defeating former Republican Gov. Larry Logan by over 10%.
