Big cities across US report decrease in violent crime during first quarter

.

New data show that 68 of the largest cities in the United States reported an average decline in violent crime in the first quarter of 2025.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association, which is comprised of law enforcement executives representing most major metropolitan areas, reported that homicides, rapes, aggravated assaults, and robberies declined in nearly every city. Assaults were down by 11% nationwide, robberies were down by almost 20%, rape decreased by 14%, and homicides were down by over 20%.

Honolulu saw the largest decrease in homicides by a rate of 82%. Minneapolis was next with a 54% decrease, then Dallas with a 44% decrease.

This news was lauded by the Trump administration.

“President Trump and his America First policies are already making communities safer, but [sic] empowering law enforcement and deporting some of the most heinous illegal immigrant criminals,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told the Washington Examiner. “Americans know that this Administration is committed to their safety and security, and that’s why crime is rapidly declining.”

ERIC ADAMS TOUTS HISTORIC DROP IN NYC CRIME: ‘SAFEST BIG CITY IN AMERICA’

While New York City did not report to the MCCA, Mayor Eric Adams revealed earlier this year that the city experienced the lowest quarter in history for instances of gun violence, which decreased by nearly 25% since last quarter, with only 140 shootings. A little less than a third of these shootings resulted in arrests by Thursday, and police recovered over 1,300 illegal firearms. The number of homicides was 17, the second-lowest quarter and over 50% less than this time last year.

Three cities reported increases in homicide, which were Fort Worth, Texas, with a 112% uptick, Houston with a 21% spike, and Kansas City with a 31% jump.
