Crockett blames MAGA for threats to Tougaloo College following commencement speech

.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) revealed that Tougaloo College, a historically black institution in Mississippi, received threats after she delivered the school’s May 4 commencement address — and she’s pointing the finger at supporters of President Donald Trump.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Crockett shared a letter from Tougaloo President Dr. Donzell Lee addressed to the college community. The letter noted the school had received “concerning calls” following her appearance and emphasized the college’s commitment to safety and free expression.

Responding to the threats, Crockett blamed “MAGA” for threats.

“No low is too low for MAGA,” she wrote. “Now explain to me why an institution would be receiving threats because of the commencement speech that I gave? This type of behavior is why I constantly need protection. Truth-telling in this country, sadly, is a dangerous business—but college students don’t deserve this.”

She added, “Just as Tougaloo was the only Mississippi campus where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. could speak in the 1960s, it’s now 2025 and this country is still stuck on hate. I’m proud to say Tougaloo is tough — and so am I.”

During her commencement remarks, Crockett encouraged graduates to embrace their power and identity in a country that often marginalizes them.

“There are going to be people that tell you that you don’t belong,” Crockett told the students. “And I am here to tell you over and over and over that you absolutely belong. There are people that are going to tell you there’s not a seat at the table for you. But I am here to remind you of Montgomery and those folding chairs. Let me tell you, we know how to use a chair—whether we’re pulling it up or doing something else with it.”

Crockett concluded with a message of readiness and resilience: “Let me be the first one to tell you—I know y’all are ready to put your boots on the ground.”
