Maine Republican state Rep. Laurel Libby condemned Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME) for pushing an agenda that the majority of her constituents disagree with when it comes to biological boys participating on teams comprised of biological females.
Libby was in Washington, D.C., last month at a press conference where Attorney General Pam Bondi announced she was suing Maine for defying President Donald Trump’s executive order with a new interpretation of Title IX to clarify it only applied to biological sex. This was meant to keep transgender athletes out of girls sports. Still, Maine has continued to allow biological boys to compete against girls, particularly one athlete who just won an 800-meter and 1,600-meter girls’ track event for North Yarmouth Academy.
“I, along with two-thirds of my fellow Mainers, agree that it’s absolutely not fair. Biological males are dominating in women’s sports,” Libby said Tuesday on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom. “They are pushing girls aside and consider this: for a state where we’re told this isn’t happening, not a big deal, stop making an issue of it, this same athlete has been dominating in girls’ cross-country running, in Nordic skiing, and now in track.”
The athlete finished the 800-meter event with a time that would have been eighth place in the boys event and finished the 1,600-meter event with a time that would have been 12th place.
Trump threatened Mills at the signing of the executive order, warning that her state could lose its federal funding if she didn’t comply. Mills promised to see Trump “in court.”
Maine received an average of $250 million in federal funding annually over the last ten years. Ultimately, Maine settled its lawsuit in exchange for the Department of Agriculture vowing not to unlawfully freeze the millions of dollars it directs to the state’s Department of Education.
THE SUPREME COURT NEEDS TO STOP MAINE’S THREAT TO DEMOCRACY
“It’s not a secret that Governor Mills’ sister is a higher-up at the institution that advances transgender treatments for Maine children and anyone coming in from out of state,” Libby said. “And so this extreme agenda, you know, we know that Governor Mills and legislative Democrats are in the minority with their stance on this, but certainly the financial repercussions could help explain why this agenda is being so aggressively pushed in our state against the will of Maine people.”
Libby has been censured for over two months for her stance on biological boys in girls sports. She shared a photo on her Facebook profile of another transgender athlete, which the legislature is demanding she apologize for before allowing her to participate again. There are just over 40 days left in the session.
