Former Vice President Kamala Harris attended the Met Gala in New York City on Monday.
It was Harris’s debut at the event, but she opted out of walking the red carpet. Invitees often use the red carpet to have their elaborate outfits photographed.
Former White House photographer Cameron Smith snapped a photo of Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff ahead of the event.
Stylist IB Kamara styled Harris in an Off-White gown. The asymmetrical floor-length gown draped Harris in one long black sleeve and one floor-length white sleeve. Harris also wore a black scarf. Emhoff wore a white and black tuxedo with a bowtie.
Kamara was also in attendance for his own Met Gala debut. The stylist walked the red carpet in a white Chanel tweed suit.
For $35,000 per ticket, attendees eat a meal and explore the art museum as new exhibits are revealed. This year’s Met Gala theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” where many celebrities took on the theme of American dandyism. It was a nod to guest curator Monica L. Miller, who wrote the book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” Dandyism was a fashion trend of wearing tailored suits to express an opulent lifestyle that was relatively new to the community at the time.
“To me the true core of dandyism is rooted in confidence and strength. There is no person who exemplifies these characteristics more than Kamala D. Harris, someone who has overcome adversity and continues to be a beacon for so many,” Kamara said in a statement.
Off-White was among Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy’s subsidiaries, along with Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany & Co., and others, before being sold to Bluestar Alliance last September.

Emhoff is a partner at the law firm Willkie Farr and Gallagher, which has offices in New York City. The couple has an apartment on the Upper West Side, a neighborhood less than two miles from the Met.
Politicians have rarely attended the Met Gala in recent years. The last to attend was Hillary Clinton in 2022. Clinton was also at the event 20 years earlier. Before Clinton, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the gala in a gown with the phrase “tax the rich.”
