Gas prices: Slightly more expensive than a week ago

.

The national average price for regular gas is $3.165 per gallon on Monday.

According to AAA, gas prices increased slightly from a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.149. On a positive note for commuters, Monday’s fuel costs were less expensive than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.262, and a year ago, when they were much more expensive, at $3.652 per gallon.

Gas prices have fluctuated greatly in 2025 and have contributed to the narrative surrounding the conversation in the nation’s political discourse on fuel costs. Gas prices are always a popular topic, with discussions focusing on whether they are increasing or decreasing. In this year, they have legitimately been both, sometimes in the same month, sometimes even in the same week.

The last seven days of gas prices have seen the national average experience high and low costs compared to earlier in the week. For example, today’s price is $3.165 per gallon. However, the national average price for a gallon of gas on Wednesday, April 30, was $3.182. This would represent a decrease within the last five days. However, if, as mentioned above, gas prices are compared between today and a week ago, gas prices are slightly higher.

However, while the national average price for a gallon of gas is a measuring tool for how cheap or expensive gas prices are, for the most part, the main determining factor of what one pays for gas depends on where one lives. Gas prices vary from state to state. Currently, the most expensive gas prices in the country are located in states on the West Coast. Areas with the least expensive fuel costs are found in those states in and around the Gulf of America.

As of Monday, Gray County, Texas, has the country’s lowest gas prices, with an average cost of $2.447 per gallon. However, Mississippi has the lowest average statewide gas prices in the country, with an average price of $2.65 per gallon. However, the county with the lowest gas price in Mississippi is Simpson County, with a cost of $2.452 per gallon, which is more expensive than the county in Texas.

Conversely, California‘s average statewide gas price is near the $5 per gallon threshold. The average cost for a gallon of regular gas in the Golden State was $4.779. Hawaii is the next most expensive state, at $4.491 per gallon, followed by Washington state at $4.258. In California, Mono County has the most expensive gas prices in the state – and the nation – with an average cost of $5.80 per gallon. The cheapest gas in California is found in Imperial County, which has an average price of $4.298 per gallon.

The states with the next two highest average gas prices are slightly below the $4-per-gallon threshold. Oregon’s average gas price is $3.898 per gallon, and Nevada’s is $3.806.
