Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) complained about Sen. Ted Cruz (D-TX) interrupting her during a Wednesday hearing when he tried to engage her in a debate over universal injunctions.
At the time of the hearing, the Trump administration had received two-thirds of all universal injunctions issued over the past 25 years. While President Donald Trump is now only halfway to his 100-day mark, judges have already handed down more than 15 injunctions. Meanwhile, former President Biden had only 14 during his whole presidency.
During the hearing, titled “Rule by District Judges II: Exploring Legislative Solutions to the Bipartisan Problem,” Cruz said, “Nationwide injunctions are an abuse of power.”
“Okay, that was a lot. Let me start with the key things. No. 1: we love the democracy,” Klobuchar responded. “The only reason there’s all of these injunctions, Sen. Cruz, is because he’s violating the Constitution. Why would Trump appoint judges who — ”
“Why don’t you file them in red districts?” Cruz interrupted.
Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), who moderated the hearing, tried to stop Cruz.
“Why don’t you file them in red districts? Why are the Democratic attorneys general seeking out left-wing — ” Cruz said before he was interrupted by Moody again. “Sen. Moody, we have debates on this committee. They occur regularly.”
Moody opted to give Klobuchar her time to continue speaking uninterrupted by calling a point of order.
“It’s so exciting to be following Sen. Cruz once again,” Klobuchar said, half laughing. “I will take more than my time since he’s taking more than his time to yell at me.”
CHUCK GRASSLEY CLAIMS HIS BILL WILL KEEP JUDGES ‘FROM BEING POLICYMAKERS’
Nearly two weeks have passed since Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a ruling prohibiting deportation flights. He is also overseeing a case involving five immigrants with active deportation orders. The Trump administration went through with the deportations, as planes were already airborne when Boasberg’s ruling came out. However, deportation flights have been paused since.
As a result, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) introduced legislation earlier this week to end nationwide injunctions.
