Republicans celebrate as BLM Plaza removal complete

Republicans celebrated the demise of Black Lives Matter Plaza, which was completely dismantled and repainted.

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser caved to pressure to remove BLM Plaza earlier this month, after Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) proposed cutting funds to the district if it wasn’t removed. Construction crews soon after began tearing into the plaza, beginning a process that has now concluded with the paving over of the dismantled street.

“MAKE D.C. BEAUTIFUL AGAIN! Goodbye to BLM plaza, you will NOT be missed!” the Trump War Room account said in a post on X, quoting a video showing the new street from Turning Point USA reporter Monica Paige.

Clyde also celebrated the demise in a post on X.

“Less than one month ago, I introduced legislation to force D.C. to remove Black Lives Matter Plaza. Today, BLM Plaza is officially GONE. We’re making our nation’s capital GREAT again!” he said with an American flag emoji.

Black Lives Matter Plaza was designated in June 2020 over the protests and riots surrounding the death of George Floyd.

THE FALL OF BLACK LIVES MATTER PLAZA

On March 4, Bowser said the city “can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference” and will commission a new mural project in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary next year.

“We have long considered Black Lives Matter Plaza’s evolution and the plaza will be part of D.C.’s America 250 mural project, where we will invite students and artists to create new murals across all eight wards,” she said.
