President Donald Trump said he was not excited about his meeting with comedian Bill Maher and that he was doing it out of obligation to his friend, musician Kid Rock.
Trump said on Truth Social that the musician asked him to meet with Maher in the White House, which he agreed to, even though he said, “I really didn’t like the idea much.” However, he expressed some optimism that the meeting with Maher, someone he said has been “unjustifiably” critical of him, could be interesting.
“The problem is, no matter how much he likes your Favorite President, ME, he will publicly proclaim what a terrible guy I am, etc., very much like the Democrats at my recent Address to the Joint Session of Congress, where I stated, correctly, that no matter what I said or did, they wouldn’t stand, they wouldn’t applaud, they wouldn’t smile or laugh and, certainly, they wouldn’t be in any way ‘nice,’” Trump said on Truth Social. “Who knows, though, maybe I’ll be proven wrong?”
Trump concluded his thoughts by confirming that Kid Rock would join Maher during the meeting and that UFC CEO Dana White, a Trump ally, may also join.

Meanwhile, Maher compared his meeting with Trump to former President Richard Nixon‘s meeting in China during his presidency. He cited how this is not the first time “two guys who’ve been at each other for so long” are meeting. Maher also expressed hope that he and Trump would be able to speak to each other “face to face,” adding that anyone expecting him to leave in a Make America Great Again hat would be “very disappointed.”
Maher has largely brushed off criticism from those who were against his visit to Trump, saying he was unconcerned about being shuttered out by his naysayers. On the other side, others have praised Maher for the meeting, with the Washington Examiner‘s Joe Concha suggesting Maher has emerged as a “voice of reason” in the Democratic Party.
