Gas prices: Another increase at the pumps to begin the week

.

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas increased to $3.168 on Monday. It’s the second straight week that started with increased fuel costs.

Monday’s price was a slight boost from the weekend, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.159 on Sunday, according to AAA. The price was also higher than a week ago when the cost of regular gas was $3.128 per gallon. Costs are also more expensive than a month ago, when fuel prices were $3.114 for each gallon.

The average price of gas has fluctuated quite a bit in 2025. After beginning the year with prices hovering around $3 per gallon ($3.067 on Jan. 3), gas prices increased in the last weeks of former President Joe Biden’s administration. Costs began to fall when President Donald Trump started his second term on Jan. 20. They continued to trend downward until Feb. when, amid talks of tariffs, prices slowly crept up. This gradual increase in fuel costs lasted mostly for February. In March, prices began to drop again.

By the middle of March, prices had dropped, and the Trump administration celebrated this decrease with multiple statements on social media and other methods of communication touting the drop in fuel prices. Yet, two days after the Trump administration started promoting a decrease at the pumps, gas prices rose again. On March 18, the average price for regular gas in the country was $3.078

Gas prices vary throughout the country depending on the area in which one lives. The least expensive gas prices are typically found in states in the Gulf region, whereas the most expensive fuel costs are on the West Coast. Mississippi has the cheapest gas, costing $2.682 per gallon. This is followed by Oklahoma at a cost of $2.703, Texas at $2.746, Louisiana at $2.761, and Alabama at $2.777.

Meanwhile, California remains the state with the most expensive gas prices, with an average of $4.809 per gallon. This is nearly thirty cents per gallon more expensive than the next closest state, Hawaii, where regular gas costs $4.51 per gallon. The state of Washington is next with a cost of $4.185, then Nevada at $3.873, followed by Oregon at $3.81.

EVEN AFTER MISSTEPS AND DEMOCRATIC ATTACKS, DOGE SUPPORT IS STILL STRONG

There is also quite a price difference in the states around Washington, D.C. Throughout the last year, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia have rotated as the state with the cheapest gas prices in the Delmarva region. Currently, Virginia holds that honor with a statewide average price for a gallon of regular gas of $2.974. Next is Delaware, with an average cost of $3.061, followed by Maryland at $3.189 per gallon.

Washington, D.C., still has the most expensive gas prices in the region, at $3.234 per gallon, which is higher than the national average.
