The national average price for a gallon of regular gas continued to climb, with five straight days of increases at the pumps. According to AAA, the new price for regular gas on Friday is $3.157 per gallon, nearly three cents per gallon more expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.129.
Fuel costs have increased approximately eight cents per gallon since March 18, when the national average price for regular gas was $3.078. This was two days after the Trump administration touted how low gas prices were throughout the country, specifically recognizing it as a four-year-low cost for March gas prices. Almost as soon as this was promoted, gas prices began to increase again. Friday’s price for a gallon of regular gas costs more than a month ago, when it was $3.114 per gallon.
Gas prices vary in different states throughout the country. States in the Gulf region are among the cheapest in the country, while fuel costs on the West Coast are the most expensive. Currently, Mississippi is the state with the least expensive regular gas prices in the nation, with a statewide average of $2.682 per gallon. Next is Oklahoma, with a statewide average of $2.726 per gallon, followed by Texas at $2.755, Louisiana at $2.763, and Alabama at $2.776.
Meanwhile, California is the state with the most expensive gas prices in the country – and has been for several months. Earlier this year, the Golden State was battling Hawaii for the dubious distinction of being the state with the highest gas prices in the country. However, California is firmly entrenched with that honor, with a statewide average price of $4.70 per gallon, nearly 1.5 times more expensive than the national average price.
Hawaii is the next most expensive state for gas, at $4.529 per gallon, followed by Washington, at $4.146 per gallon. Those are the only states with average prices for a gallon of regular gas above the price point of $4 per gallon. Nevada, at $3.788 per gallon, and Oregon, at $3.779, round out the top five states with the highest average fuel costs.

Virginia has the region’s lowest gas prices, with an average statewide of $2.969 per gallon. This is followed by Delaware, which has a price of $3.045 per gallon, and then Maryland, a state where prices have soared recently, coming in with a cost of $3.17 per gallon. The nation’s capital has an average price of $3.209 for a gallon of regular gas.
