A tourist submarine believed to be carrying at least 45 Russians sank off the coast of Egypt, killing at least six people, according to the Russian Embassy in Egypt and state media.
The tourists were on an excursion to explore the Red Sea when the submarine sank off the Egyptian coast near Hurghada, a popular vacation destination about 300 miles southeast of Cairo.
While six people have been reported dead by local news outlets, the exact numbers cannot be immediately confirmed. Twenty-nine people were pulled from the water in a rescue mission.
“Most of those on board were rescued and taken to their hotels and hospitals in Hurghada,” the Russian Embassy said, adding that “their health condition is not a concern.”
The Consulate General in Hurghada said 38 people had been rescued from the boat. According to the Russian Information Agency, 14 were taken to hospital, and 24 were brought back to their travel accommodation.
It is not known how the remaining eight passengers have fared, according to Russian Consular General Viktor Voropaev.
