Markwayne Mullin fact-checks CNN poll on Trump approval

.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) dismissed President Donald Trump‘s approval rating as reported by CNN, responding that it is still “higher than it ever was” for former President Joe Biden.

Biden left office with an all-time low approval rating, disappointing supporters by dropping out of the 2024 race too late and pardoning his son, Hunter Biden. A Gallup poll from the start of this year found that 48% of all likely voters reported Biden would be remembered as one of America’s “worst” presidents. Only 12% thought that Biden had done an “outstanding” or “above average” job as president.

“There‘s a new CNN poll today out that says Americans are not that impressed with how [Trump has] handled it so far, it‘s 56% majority of the public disapproves,” CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins said Wednesday on her show The Source. “That’s a higher disapproval than it ever was during his first term in office.”

“It‘s still higher than it ever was with Biden, though,” Mullin retorted.

“Well, but you’re already judging him just on Biden‘s numbers?” Collins asked.

“No, I‘m just saying that if you‘re going to if you‘re going to use numbers, you‘re using his high number in his first four years, we had inflation at 1.4%,” Mullin said. “But he‘s got to recover from four years of Biden. Keep in mind, we were in a recession over Biden, but no one talked about it.”

Mullin went on to defend the tariffs against Mexico, Canada, and China. They come amid a yearslong border crisis that included immigrants illegally crossing the border and an increase of Chinese-produced fentanyl discovered in states sharing borders with Mexico, with even Oklahoma close enough to feel the effects. Some have argued that the 43 pounds of fentanyl found on the U.S. northern border are not enough to justify a tariff against Canada, but Mullin disagreed.

“Just in the last seven days, Oklahoma has apprehended 5 pounds of fentanyl,” Mullin said. “Now, 5 pounds doesn‘t sound like a lot, but a little bit of fentanyl, 2.2 pounds of fentanyl is enough to kill 500,000 people.”

“Senator Mark Wayne Mullin was great on Fake News CNN,” Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. “Made Caitlin Collins look like the third rate, low ratings reporter, she is!”

Trump delayed the tariffs for a second time, to April 2.
