Dave Chappelle tells Trump ‘whole world is counting on you’

.

Comedian Dave Chappelle offered President-elect Donald Trump a wish of “good luck” during his monologue on Saturday Night Live.

“The presidency is no place for petty people. So Donald Trump, I know you watch the show,” Chappelle said during his opening monologue. “Man, remember: whether people voted for you or not, they’re all counting on you. Whether they like you or not, they’re all counting on you. The whole world is counting on you. I mean this when I say this: good luck. Please, do better next time. Please, all of us, do better next time. Do not forget your humanity, and please have empathy for displaced people, whether they’re in the Palisades or Palestine.”

INAUGURATION DAY 2025: EVERYTHING TO KNOW AHEAD OF TRUMP TAKING OFFICE

Chappelle has been SNL’s token host in the episodes that followed elections, beginning in 2016 when Trump won his first term. At the time, Chappelle was part of a skit where he and fellow comedian Chris Rock were unsurprised by the election results while the other cast members were shocked to see Trump beat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

According to Chappelle, showrunner Lorne Michaels had repeatedly asked Chappelle to perform in the days following this latest 2024 election, but he opted to not return until the Saturday before Trump’s inauguration. The comedian joked that as soon as he agreed to host, fires sparked across southern California.

Trump was the butt of a couple of jokes from Chappelle, who referenced the moment when Trump accused Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, of eating pet dogs and cats during his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Chappelle lives in Yellow Springs, the neighboring city to Springfield, and refuted the claim about pets.

This comes after fellow comedians interviewed Trump and his running mate JD Vance to the tune of millions of views on the Joe Rogan Experience, the Tim Dillon Show, and This Past Weekend. Hosts Joe Rogan, Tim Dillon, and Theo Von claimed they presented the same opportunity to Harris, who did not accept before Election Day.
