Arizona Gov. Hobbs says she is cautiously prepared to work with Trump on the border

.

Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) said her administration will work with President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming administration so long as its policies do not harm communities in the state.

In remarks said during a visit to the border town of Nogales, Arizona, Monday, Hobbs expressed concern about Trump’s mass deportation plan, in which Trump has pledged to deport tens of millions of immigrants. She still said she looks “forward to having conversations with the incoming president about Arizona’s needs, including border security.”

“I will not tolerate actions that harm Arizonans, that harm our communities and, quite honestly, divert resources from providing real security at our border,” Hobbs stated.

Hobbs additionally said that she will respond once she knows the exact details of the incoming administration’s actions. According to the Pew Research Center, over 22 million people in the country currently live in a household with at least one resident who is in the U.S. without authorization.

During Monday’s border visit, Hobbs also said communities across the state are becoming safer thanks to an anti-fentanyl task force launched in July 2024. She touted Task Force SAFE for helping seize over 6 million fentanyl pills and 1,400 pounds of meth, cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl powder from Arizona streets.

The task force supports the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and is made up of members of the Arizona National Guard.

“Protecting our border is not a Republican or Democratic issue. It is an Arizona and an American issue, and that’s why I will work with anyone to secure our border,” Hobbs said.

“Just as I worked with this current administration to launch Task Force SAFE, I will work with the next one to deliver border security,” She continued.

Hobbs said she also plans to highlight to Trump “the work we’ve done here to build these partnerships that are actually producing results and how we can continue those partnerships under his administration.”
