Cotton positions himself for No. 3 leadership position in charge of GOP messaging

.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has gained support from the majority of Republican senators to be elected to the GOP No. 3 leadership position.

Axios reported Sunday that according to sources with direct knowledge of the Cotton team’s whip count, Cotton had secured votes to become the GOP’s Conference Chair. The outlet said Cotton has called every senator, including incoming senators, to address their ideas and concerns.

The conference chair is responsible for crafting the messaging of the party and ensuring continuity from members. They also determine many committee assignments, and set legislative agendas.

On Wednesday, the senator is expected to win the leadership role, driving out Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) bid to become Conference Chair. Sen. Shelley Capito (R-W.Va.) is also running for the No. 4 position currently held by Ernst.
