Washington, D.C., City Councilman Trayon White, who is facing felony bribery charges, won reelection on Tuesday.
The Democratic councilman representing Ward 8, a Democratic stronghold, defeated Republican Nate Derenge and several other write-in candidates who launched campaigns upon news of White’s indictment. White captured 83.9% of the vote.
White took to Instagram on election night to celebrate his reelection into his third term.
“With gratitude and humility, I want to thank God and all those who voted for me!” White wrote. “I was at the different poll stations all day and it was consistent love and support. … Let’s send a message loud and clear to the D.C. Council and the naysayers that the people have spoken.”

White was arrested and charged in August for allegedly accepting $156,000 in bribes to extend two city work contracts for an organization.
Now the D.C. Council is conducting its own investigation into White’s alleged bribery scandal. The council is expected to have findings ready to share by Dec. 16. White will then have 30 days to prepare a defense. The council will hold a vote on whether to punish White, which could include removing him from office. This would require 11 out of 13 council members to vote in favor of.
