Republican state Sen. John McGuire has won the race to represent Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.
McGuire beat Democrat Gloria Witt 57.5%-42.5% when the Associated Press called the race at 10:52 p.m. Eastern time with 79% of the ballots counted.
Virginia’s 5th District was another open House seat in Virginia that created steep competition between Democrats and Republicans to gain control of the House this election cycle.

The seat was left open by incumbent Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), who, upon losing the primary race for the House seat, declared he would run for the seat once again in 2026. Good has represented Virginia’s 5th Congressional District since January 2021, and the open Republican seat gave Democrats an opportunity to gain power back in the House.
