Gas prices: Costs continue to fall across the country

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas fell to a new low on Monday, coming in at $3.13, according to AAA. This was cheaper than a week ago, when the average price for a gallon of regular was $3.175. Monday’s pricing point was the least expensive gas has been in the country since Jan. 2024, when the average price was $3.075.

Gas prices are an important topic heading into the presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances. Gas prices remain higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices increased in Washington, D.C., on Monday, rising to $3.313 for a gallon of regular gas. This increased from over the weekend when it only cost $3.298 per gallon. Monday’s price was higher than a week ago in the nation’s capital when regular gas was $3.309 per gallon. Monday’s price was slightly more expensive than gas prices a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas was  $3.31.

Delaware

Gas prices in Delaware followed the national trend and decreased on Monday. The average cost for a gallon of regular gas in the state to start the work week is $3.045, down from Sunday’s price of $3.049. This was cheaper than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost Delaware residents $3.073. However, gas prices on Monday were less expensive than a month ago in the First State, when a gallon of regular gas was $3.177.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Virginia fell on Monday to $3.058. This was a decrease from Sunday’s price of $3.062. Both prices are less expensive than a week ago, when regular gas was $3.081 per gallon. However, the current average price is more expensive than a month ago, when regular gas was $3.014 per gallon.

Maryland

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maryland also decreased on Monday. The new total is $3.133, a drop from Sunday’s price of $3.136. Like every area but Washington, D.C., these prices in Maryland are less expensive than a week ago, when gas in the state was $3.155. However, prices are less expensive than a month ago, when regular gas soared to $3.244 per gallon.
