Megyn Kelly and Bill Maher spar over post-2024 election denialism: ‘It won’t be the same’

Journalist Megyn Kelly’s appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher got a bit testy when the topic of denying the presidential election results was brought up, during which Kelly contended Vice President Kamala Harris could deny the results if she loses.

Kelly’s argument with late-night host Bill Maher was prefaced with Maher noting how his show has “a great crowd” able to laugh at jokes poking fun at Democrats, prompting Kelly to contend “most of America” is able to laugh at both parties. Maher then addressed the possibility of former President Donald Trump claiming to have not lost the election should Harris win in November, to which he asked Kelly why she is still supporting the former president.

“Well, don’t think there won’t be denialism if Kamala Harris loses too,” Kelly said, with Maher quickly interjecting, “It won’t be the same.”

Kelly then argued Harris and her supporters are already “laying the foundation for lawfare,” and that the 2024 election cycle will continue “for weeks” after Election Day. Kelly added that former 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was “the original election denier,” with Maher arguing that Clinton’s “grumbling” was different from Trump’s “trying to overturn” the election results.

“You‘re allowed to file legal challenges in response to an election, which is what Trump did, and he lost, and he did wind up leaving office,” Kelly said. “I‘m not going to defend his behavior on Jan. 6. I never have, and I‘m not going to start tonight. But if you don‘t think there‘s going to be denialism on the Dem side, you haven‘t been paying attention to what‘s been happening on that side for these years.”

The host of The Megyn Kelly Show then expressed why she is supporting the former president’s 2024 bid for the White House, which included increasing border security to prevent illegal immigrants killing residents like Laken Riley or Jocelyn Nungaray. She also cited the effect that transgender surgeries are having on children, calling this “almost my single issue.”

With only days left before the 2024 presidential election, a new Emerson College Poll has found that Trump and Harris are tied among recipients at 49%, marking the first time Trump has tied with the vice president since President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid earlier this year. On Friday, CNN’s poll had the race tied at 47%, and the New York Times/Siena survey had it tied at 48%.

One of the key battleground states Trump is seeking to win is Pennsylvania, where Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) contended that the former president’s support is “astonishing.” Part of the support Trump has in Pennsylvania, Fetterman suggested, is how billionaire Elon Musk has been busy stumping for the former president there, as Musk “is a bigger star than Trump.”
