Three things Harris didn’t answer in first press conference after CNN town hall

.

Vice President Kamala Harris gathered reporters the day after her CNN town hall but sidestepped answering questions on topics from the border to Beyonce.

Harris jabbed at former President Donald Trump for not taking part in his own town hall, with the vice president agreeing to her televised event after Trump declined to debate a second time.

“Clearly his staff has been saying he’s exhausted,” she told reporters in Philadelphia. “The sad part about that is he’s trying to be president of the United States, probably the toughest job in the world. And he’s exhausted.”

But when pressed on whether she supports continuing building a border wall, among other topics, Harris sidestepped, instead previewing that more details will come.

Harris won’t commit to continue building border wall

Harris was pushed during the CNN town hall about whether she supports building a southern border wall, Trump’s signature policy from his 2016 campaign.

Harris endorsed the bipartisan border security deal negotiated by the Senate this spring, before it was disavowed by Trump, which contains provisions for the wall. She has previously described the wall as “stupid, useless, and a medieval vanity project.”

“I will tell you that my highest priority is to put the resources into ensuring that our border is secure,” the vice president said Thursday. “I’ve been very clear: I’m going to bring back up as president that bipartisan border security bill, and make sure that it is brought to my desk so I can sign it into law.”

“The biggest issue that we have right now is that Donald Trump has stood in the way of what would have been a proven part of the solution to the bigger problem, which is that we have a broken immigration system in America and we need to fix it,” she added. “We have the tools at hand, but we have on the other side of this election, Donald Trump, who would prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem.”

Harris hasn’t ‘read’ California’s tough-on-crime ballot measure

Less than two weeks before Election Day, Harris has not decided whether to back California’s Proposition 36 ballot measure, which would introduce tougher penalties for certain theft and drug crimes.

“I have not yet voted, and I have not yet had the chance to read through the ballot. I will keep you posted on that,” she said.

Harris teased the prospect of other ‘heavy hitters’ hitting the campaign trail

As she heads to Atlanta for a rally with former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen, both of whom will be in Philadelphia on Monday, and before she is expected to appear alongside Beyonce at an event in Houston on Friday, Harris was coy when asked what other Democratic “heavy hitters” are anticipated to campaign in Pennsylvania before Nov. 3.

“I have nothing to report at this moment. Stay tuned,” she said with a smile.
