Former President Donald Trump promised “readjustments” to make taxes “fair to everybody” in an occasionally tense town hall focused on women.
During a town hall with Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner, Trump took various questions from women. An injured single mother said that her child tax credit has decreased by 80% and that she couldn’t apply for assistance because she didn’t make under $700 a month. She asked Trump what realistic changes he could make to the tax code to improve the situation of struggling families in the United States.
“I gave you the largest tax cuts in the history of our country, OK, larger than the Reagan cuts. Larger. I understand exactly what you’re saying,” Trump responded. “We’re going to readjust things so that it’s fair to everybody because it’s really not fair to everybody. But we have a lot, and we’re going … up higher, but we’re also going to readjust because you have to make some readjustments. It’s unfair to some people and we’re not going to have that.”
Another attendee gave Trump one of the most direct abortion-related questions of the campaign.
“My name is Pamela. I am from Cumming, Georgia, right here and originally from Danville, California. So, facing the question of abortion, women are entitled to do what they want to and need to do with their bodies, including their unborn,” the woman said. “That’s on them regardless of the circumstance. Some are necessary to save their own lives. Why is the government involved in women’s basic rights?”
Trump gave an answer consistent with his previous statements on the matter, saying it should be left to the states.
“For 52 years, this issue has torn our country apart. Every legal scholar, the great ones, every lawyer, but the Democrats, the Republicans, the liberals and conservatives, they wanted it brought out of the federal government and brought back to the states for a vote of the people,” he said. “And like Ronald Reagan, I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest, life of the mother. I strongly believe, you know, you have to follow your heart. Some people don’t. It’s a very small percentage, but you have to follow your heart. But you have the exceptions. But with what we were able to do is through really the courage of six Supreme Court justices, we were able to do this after years and years of turmoil.”

Trump fielded another question over migrant crime, in response to which he said his administration would end sanctuary cities.
