Gas prices: Costs remain higher than a week ago

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas on Tuesday remains higher than a week ago. The average cost is $3.203, the same as on Monday. A week ago, the average price was more than two cents cheaper, at $3.181.

Gas prices are slightly lower than a month ago when a gallon of regular gas was $3.209. Current average gas prices are the lowest in the country since January 2024, when they were $3.075. Despite the recent trend of decreases, gas prices have fluctuated throughout the year and vary significantly among states.

The price of gas is a crucial topic heading into next month’s presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances. Gas prices remain higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices in Washington, D.C., decreased on Tuesday, with the district’s average for a gallon of regular gas dropping to $3.305 — less than one cent cheaper than Monday’s price. This was slightly less expensive than a week ago, when regular gas was $3.319 per gallon. Overall, gas prices in Washington are less expensive today than a month ago when regular gas cost residents in the nation’s capital $3.421 per gallon.

Maryland

Gas prices increased slightly in Maryland on Tuesday as the average gallon of regular gas cost rose to $3.242. On Monday, the price of regular gas was less than one cent cheaper, coming in at $3.239 per gallon. Gas prices in the state remain slightly more expensive than a week ago, when drivers also paid $3.239 per gallon. However, compared to a month ago, it is more expensive to fill up in Maryland on Tuesday than a month ago, when regular gas was $3.09 per gallon.

Delaware

Gas prices increased a bit in Delaware on Tuesday with a gallon of regular gas now costing $3.188, a very small increase from Monday’s price of $3.187. After several days of sharp increases last week, gas prices in the First State have cooled off a bit. A gallon of regular gas is less expensive than a week ago, when it was $3.211. However, gas prices are higher than a month ago, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware was only $2.99.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Virginia fell on Tuesday, coming in at $3.129. This was a slight drop from Monday, when it was $3.131. Tuesday’s pricing is more expensive than a week ago in Virginia, when regular gas was $3.066 per gallon. The same holds for prices from a month ago, when drivers in Virginia paid $3.054 per gallon for regular gas.

California

California has the most expensive pricing in the nation on Tuesday for a gallon of regular in the nation at $4.677. This was a very slight increase from Monday’s pricing of $4.676 per gallon. A week ago, drivers in California paid slightly more at the pumps with a regular gas price of $4.68 per gallon. These prices are less expensive than a month ago in the Golden State, when a gallon of regular gas cost $4.77.

Georgia

Georgia remained the state with the country’s lowest gas prices on Tuesday, with a gallon of regular gas now costing drivers in the state $2.714. This was more than a one cent increase from Monday. Both prices this week are also less expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $2.729. Furthermore, Tuesday’s gas prices in the Peach State were also considerably cheaper than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas in the state was $2.971 per gallon.
