Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), Democratic vice presidential candidate, said he would heed Vice President Kamala Harris’s call and be more “careful” with his language.
“I did it even the other day of just, uh, speaking passionately about these gun violence situations and meeting with these survivors,” Walz told Michael Strahan on ABC’s Good Morning America.
“I’ve sat in the room with the Sandy Hook folks. I’m a friend with David Hogg, who’s been an activist on this,” he continued.
Walz’s promise to think before he speaks comes less than two weeks after his debate debacle against Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Republican vice presidential candidate, in which he told over 40 million viewers he had become “friends with school shooters.”
“It’s very clear that I wear, you know … I wear my emotions on my sleeve,” Walz said. “I do think in these positions, whether it be governor or being vice president of the United States, uh, you do need to be collect, careful. You do need to be a little more, uh, thoughtful on it.”
Walz credits his passionate rhetoric to his time in classrooms and on the football field.
“I speak passionately, and I think doing that, you need to combine the two, and I think that’s what [Harris] is referring to,” he said.
Passionate language is one thing, but Strahan also asked Walz to respond to allegations that the governor blatantly lied about carrying weapons in war and being at the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre.
Walz has been to China and was in the National Guard, but he was not at the Tiananmen Square massacre, and he was not deployed to a combat zone.
“It’s one of the things about trust,” Strahan said. “Some people who say we can’t trust him even to tell the truth about himself.”

“Well, I said they know who I am,” Walz replied. “I know who I am. I know the work that I’ve done.”
“I know that things get spun in a political environment, but I think what they see is, if they want to compare that talking about immigration policy or seeing the things Donald Trump would say, I think there’s a big difference than, uh, than missing a date when you were there and, again, spinning something for a political reason,” he added.
