Democratic lawmaker tells parent to ‘shut up’ about child’s education

A Democratic lawmaker in New Hampshire is under fire after telling a parent to “shut up” about his or her child’s education in the Granite State.
Democratic state Rep. Tommy Hoyt received an email from a “parent of four” imploring him to support New Hampshire bill SB 272, which would establish a parental bill of rights prohibiting public schools from reserving information pertaining to students in the classroom, according to a report.

Hoyt replied, insisting the pandemic demonstrated parents are “incompetent teachers” and should stay out of their children’s education.
“Do you know why children’s results tanked during COVID? Their parents were incompetent teachers,” Hoyt told the parent.
“Do your children a favor, let the teachers teach, and shut up. You’re clearly no professional.”
The backlash was swift against the lawmaker, but he did confirm the statement was his, according to the report.
He “probably could have used better words,” he said.
“The way I feel is that children’s test scores in school performance dropped off drastically was because they didn’t have teachers,” Hoyt said.

“And the parents that thought, ‘We can replace them and can tell them what to do,’ was not effective.”
SB 272 was defeated 195-190 Thursday, the report noted, with critics suggesting its passage would “out” students who question their identities.
