Rep. Claudia Tenney suggests ‘dirty DOJ’ has ‘targeted’ plans with Adams indictment

.

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) argued that the Justice Department could have ulterior motives with the recent indictment against New York Mayor Eric Adams, citing how old most of the crimes he is charged with are.

The 57-page indictment charged Adams with numerous counts ranging from federal program bribery to wire fraud, all of which could land him up to 45 years in prison if convicted. Tenney, despite being critical of the Democratic mayor’s “terrible” policies, questioned why his charges were not prosecuted eight years earlier and suggested it was because Adams’s party needed him to become mayor at the time.

“Now they don’t want their guy in office, because why? He stood up to President Biden,” Tenney said on Fox Business Network’s The Big Money Show. “But you know what they also did, the DOJ, they slow-walked all the evidence we had on Hunter Biden, his charges would have been even worse. And so this is a dirty DOJ. Merrick Garland is a dirty cop running a very dirty DOJ.”

Tenney said that while the mayor looks “very guilty,” his indictment “looks targeted.” As such, she believes Adams is innocent until proven guilty.

“I could be wrong, but I served in the New York State Legislature,” Tenney said. “I’ve seen when the Democrats attack each other and how bad it can be. And I feel like they’re really trying to remove him because he’s got some primary opponents who are lurking in the background, who by the way, are equally bad.”

Adams has received several calls to resign from office, but the mayor has said he has no plans to do so. Among those calling for his resignation are Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY).

The next in line to succeed Adams, should he resign or be removed, would be New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who has declined to say if Adams should resign but called the indictment “incredibly serious.”
