NBA superstar LeBron James was selected as the male flagbearer for the United States Team during the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris on Friday night. It marks the first time a men’s basketball player was chosen for the honor.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said.

It is the fourth Olympics for James, 39, who previously played on the 2004, 2008, and 2012 men’s Olympic basketball teams. His team won the bronze medal in 2004 and gold medals in 2008 and 2012.

“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations,” James said after being chosen for flagbearer. “Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

The Associated Press reported that James was nominated by fellow Olympic basketball player and Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry. Curry is participating in the Olympics for the first time despite being a four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player.

“We understand how much of an honor it is to be in that position, and I think Bron’s entire career, on and off the court, speaks for itself as him being worthy of that honor,” Curry announced in the video to nominate James.

“He has represented what it means to be excellent both on and off the court in his commitment to service and to uplifting the community in all ways that he knows how has been a lifelong passion,” Curry said. “And the work speaks for itself.”

The female flagbearer for the U.S. Olympic team will be announced on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.
