Former President Donald Trump took to social media on Wednesday to brag about paving the way for the Supreme Court to strike down Roe v. Wade last June, even as he hesitates to support a new goal of anti-abortion activists: a federal ban on the procedure.
“After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone, and for the first time put the Pro Life movement in a strong negotiating position over the Radicals that are willing to kill babies even into their 9th month, and beyond,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!” the former president added.
Trump nominated the three Supreme Court justices, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett, that gave conservatives a 6-3 majority on the high court and helped overturn Roe, returning decisions on abortion access to the states.
But despite Trump’s successful efforts to oppose abortion, he has remained hesitant to support a federal ban. After Trump suggested that states should have control over enacting anti-abortion laws last month, a prominent conservative group publicly attacked him.
“President Trump’s assertion that the Supreme Court returned the issue of abortion solely to the states is a completely inaccurate reading of the Dobbs decision and is a morally indefensible position for a self-proclaimed pro-life presidential candidate to hold,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.
Yet earlier this month, the group reversed its antipathy after meeting with Trump. “President Trump reiterated his opposition to the extreme Democratic position of abortion on demand, up until the moment of birth, paid for by taxpayers — and even in some cases after the child is born,” Dannenfelser said in a statement.
“President Trump knows the vast majority of Americans oppose brutal late-term abortions when the child can feel pain and suck their thumbs. President Trump reiterated that any federal legislation protecting these children would need to include the exceptions for life of the mother and in cases of rape and incest,” she continued.
During a CNN town hall Trump participated in last week, he once again refused to say he would support a federal abortion ban when host Kaitlan Collins repeatedly pressed him on it. “What I will do is negotiate so that people are happy,” Trump told Collins.
“I want to do what’s right,” Trump said when he was asked again.
Potential 2024 presidential challenger Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed a new six-week abortion ban into law and recently criticized Trump for saying it was “too harsh” during an interview with the Messenger, a digital media startup, on Monday.

“Protecting an unborn child when there’s a detectable heartbeat is something that almost 99% of pro-lifers support,” DeSantis said during a news conference on Tuesday. “As a Florida resident, you know, he didn’t give an answer about, ‘Would you have signed the heartbeat bill that Florida did, that had all the exceptions that people talk about?’”
Meanwhile, fellow Trump challenger and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has repeatedly said it is not “realistic” to enact a federal abortion ban into law given the makeup of Congress.
