Biden leading Trump and DeSantis in 2024 matchup: Poll

A new poll shows President Joe Biden leading former President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in a 2024 matchup.
A Reuters-Ipsos survey conducted from May 9-15 showed, however, that Trump might have a better chance at beating Biden. When respondents were presented with Biden and DeSantis, Biden received 37% of the vote, while DeSantis received just 33%. When respondents were presented with Biden and Trump, Biden received 38% of the vote, while Trump received 36%.

Pollsters also presented an alternate scenario in which DeSantis received the Republican nomination but Trump ran as an independent third candidate. In that case, Biden won 37% of the vote, DeSantis 19%, and Trump 22%. The finding shows the growing rivalry between Trump and DeSantis, as their combined totals would defeat Biden by 4 percentage points, but individually both fall short.
The poll also expanded Trump’s lead as the favorite Republican nominee; 49% of Republicans preferred Trump, compared to 19% for DeSantis. The Florida governor has not launched a 2024 bid but is widely expected to in the coming weeks.

Trump also polled as performing better with independents; a Biden-DeSantis matchup had independents voting 27% for Biden and 21% for DeSantis, compared to 30% for Biden and 27% for Trump in a Biden-Trump matchup.
For the Reuters-Ipsos survey, 4,415 adults were surveyed, split between 2,089 Democrats, 1,642 Republicans, and 477 independents. It had a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points for Democrats, plus or minus 3 percentage points for Republicans, and plus or minus 5.5 percentage points for independents.
