Fast-food giant Taco Bell filed legal action to liberate the popular phrase “Taco Tuesday” to be used by restaurants around the country, Taco Bell announced Tuesday.

“Tacos have the unique ability to bring people together and bring joy to their lives on an otherwise mediocre day of the week: Taco Tuesday,” according to a press release by Taco Bell.

“But since 1989, ‘Taco Tuesday’ has been registered as a trademark, creating potential legal consequences for those that want to use the phrase,” it said. “And that’s just not right.”

For over 30 years, Taco John’s, a competitor of Taco Bell, has owned the registration for the poplar phrase in 49 states, with Gregory’s, a small business in New Jersey, owning it in the Garden State, according to a report.

Taco Bell filed legal petitions through the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to terminate the federal trademark registrations surrounding “Taco Tuesday.”

“Taco Bell believes ‘Taco Tuesday’ should belong to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos. In fact, the very essence of ‘Taco Tuesday’ is to celebrate the commonality amongst people of all walks of life who come together every week to celebrate something as simple, yet culturally phenomenal, as the taco,” the company’s press release added.

“How can anyone Live Más if they’re not allowed to freely say ‘Taco Tuesday?’ It’s pure chaos.”

No damages or trademark rights relating to the use of the popular phrase are being sought by Taco Bell, according to the press release.

Taco Bell only seeks common sense for usage of the phrase.

“In filing the legal petitions, Taco Bell is honoring people’s right to come together and celebrate the joys of tacos, on Tuesdays and every other day,” the release said.

The fast-food giant invites all those passionate about the cause to sign a “Freeing Taco Tuesday” petition and take part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything-style discussion on May 22, according to the report.
