EXCLUSIVE — Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) revealed some qualities she would like to see in a Republican 2024 presidential nominee.

“I have said for a long time that I want to see a woman on the ticket,” Mace told the Washington Examiner in an interview.

Asked if she is going to endorse presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who was once governor of South Carolina, she explained, “I greatly admire Nikki Haley.”

She further noted that Haley endorsed her in her 2022 primary race against a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump. “She was the only one to endorse me last year in my race, where Donald Trump handpicked someone to run against me,” Mace said.

“I have great admiration and respect for her for sticking her neck out,” she said of Haley.

Revealing that she’s watching the 2024 primary campaigns closely, she claimed, “I would love to see a South Carolinian on the ticket. I would certainly love for it to be a woman. It’s past time we had a woman president and I would love to her to be a conservative.”

Despite her desire to see a South Carolinian and a woman as president, Mace hasn’t made an endorsement.

She has committed to supporting the Republican Party’s nominee, not excluding Trump.

“I’ve largely, by and large supported his policies over the years and that’s — that’s never changed. But the politics of personalities sometimes, you know, is unnecessary,” she said of the former president who tried to primary her.

“We should want every Republican to be successful, which means not just winning the primary and then losing in general. We should want to win primaries and win general elections,” she explained.

Trump was criticized after the 2022 midterm elections when several candidates he propped up in key races across the country lost the general elections after beating other Republican primary opponents.

The former president is leading the primary field in polling from Morning Consult with the support of 61% of potential Republican primary voters. Haley is in fourth place, polling at 4%. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and former Vice President Mike Pence are polling at second and third with 18% and 6%, respectively.

Both DeSantis and Pence have yet to announce campaigns, but the men are each widely expected to do so in the next month.
