One outcome is becoming clear as Biden and congressional leaders reach for a budget deal to end the debt ceiling standoff: The COVID-era big government spending, to halt the pandemic and rebuild in its aftermath, is giving way to a new fiscal focus on longer term investments and stemming deficits. Democrats are zeroing in on the debt limit battle in a new campaign blitz targeting 10 toss-up districts.

The Democratic National Committee rolled out a six-figure ad buy assailing Republicans in competitive districts for gambling with default amid high-stakes debt ceiling negotiations, a spokesperson confirmed. Democrats only need to flip five seats to recapture control of the House.

One ad highlighted former President Donald Trump saying during a CNN town hall last week that the country “might as well default.”

“The question Republicans need to answer is this — are they willing to follow Donald Trump’s advice saying Republicans ‘might as well’ default? If they do, MAGA Republicans will be responsible for bringing us to the brink of an economic catastrophe,” DNC spokesman Daniel Wessel said in a statement obtained by the Washington Examiner.

Targeted districts include Pennsylvania’s 1st, 7th, 8th, and 17th congressional districts; Ohio’s 1st and 13th districts; Michigan’s 8th and 10th districts; Arizona’s 6th district; and Nevada’s 3rd district.

Democrats have been pummeling Republicans over their proposed Save, Limit, Grow Act, which cleared the House along a party-line vote last month, and would impose a slew of spending cuts in exchange for hiking up the debt limit.

“The House Republican wish list would put a million older adults at risk of losing their food assistance and going hungry. Rather than push Americans into poverty, we should reduce the deficit by making sure the wealthy and large corporations pay their fair share in taxes,” President Joe Biden tweeted.

Biden is set to meet with congressional leaders Tuesday in an attempt to hash out an agreement on the debt limit. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen estimates that her department’s “extraordinary” measures to forestall a default will run out by June 1.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has demanded a debt ceiling hike be paired with spending reductions, while Democrats have insisted on a clean bill with no strings attached.
