Family- and faith-friendly media expand: GAC merges with Pure Flix, Angel Studios debuts new projects

Family-friendly and faith-filled media are expanding as Great American Media has announced it is joining forces with the Pure Flix streaming platform while crowdfunding distributor Angel Studios has announced 10 new projects.
Great American Media announced it merged with Pure Flix on Thursday, with Great American Media President and CEO Bill Abbott set to oversee day-to-day operations and serve as CEO of the merged entity.

“In a media environment where programming and distribution business models are in a constant state of flux, this agreement provides a rare opportunity to maximize our potential with the expertise, market knowledge and content creation capabilities of a world class partner like Sony Pictures,” Abbott said in a statement obtained by the Washington Examiner.
“This merger will allow us to further our commitment to original, quality content and make Great American Media and Pure Flix leaders in a large and under-served market,” he said.
While celebrating their own success regarding a growing number of faith-based and family-friendly projects, Angel Studios’s co-founders Jeff Harmon, Neal Harmon, and Jordan Harmon told the Washington Examiner that they were encouraged by the news of Great American Media’s merger with Pure Flix.
“They are offering something that the rest of the market is just ignoring,” Jeff Harmon said of Great American Media. “They’re offering what the market wants, and I hope that they just continue to explode.”
“We know that team well,” Neal Harmon said of Pure Flix. “We’re excited about what that combination is going to do for the industry and the kind of stories that will come out of that partnership and merger.”
Angel Studios recently announced 10 new original projects that will begin production through the distributing company’s crowdfunding model. Angel said its plan is to reach 1 billion viewers worldwide by 2027.
“I think the culture today is starving for an experience that they can walk away from feeling uplifted and feeling like they gain from the experience versus walking away feeling empty,” Jordan Harmon added. “Our mission is to tell stories that amplify light.”
Among Angel’s new projects are Homestead, a dystopian story about the power of family during an apocalypse that will feature Neal McDonough; Gabriel and the Guardians, an anime-style saga about the ancient Dead Sea Scrolls; Drybar Unscripted, an improv comedy series; Quitters, a multiseason drama chronicling the human side of overcoming addictions; and a series about the founding of America created by Jon Erwin, the director and producer of Jesus Revolution.

Pure Flix was acquired by Sony Pictures Television in December 2020. It services 1 million subscribers across the United States and Canada.
Great American Family, one of Great American Media’s cable networks, is in 50 million homes at present, and it is carried by all major cable providers.
