Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) about immigration, claiming he was “demonizing” immigrants.

Gonzales made the statement during an appearance on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” during which he argued that a centrist solution was needed to rectify the border crisis. He claimed that both sides were behaving irresponsibly and inflaming tensions.

“You’ve got McCarthy on one side that is demonizing those that come over illegally,” Gonzales said. “You’ve got Chuck Schumer on the other side in the Senate that makes it a morally good thing to help people who are coming over illegally.”

“Who gets hurt in this is people that have legal claims,” he added. “Immigration reform gets further and further behind when we only focus on the illegal part.”

Gonzales urged the Biden administration to send a “surge” of immigration judges to the border in order to better process the huge queue of immigrants. He argued it was the right of everyone coming to the United States to get a day in court.

“That person should get their case heard in days, not years,” Gonzales said. “This is America. Get your day in court. If you do not qualify for asylum … you get sent back to your country of origin.”
