Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said that the strongest case against former President Donald Trump winning the Republican nomination in 2024 is that “he’s a loser.”

“I saw a lot of candidates try to debate him on policy. Look, you don’t debate Donald Trump on policy. The guy has massive insecurities. He’s a loser, and he lost many times. He lost races in New Hampshire, not just for himself, but for my fellow candidates,” Sununu said on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki.

“If you can’t win in November, then you shouldn’t even be in the discussion,” Sununu said Sunday.

Sununu has long contended that Trump was a drag on the GOP throughout the 2018, 2020, and 2022 election cycles. Other potential rivals to Trump, such as former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), have echoed similar concerns.

The New Hampshire governor is mulling a potential presidential run and has indicated that he will make a decision within the coming weeks. Trump famously bulldozed through a slate of 16 major Republican foes in 2016 who tried to contrast him on policy and temperament.

“You think the best argument is he’s a loser,” host Jen Psaki asked.

“Yes,” Sununu added.

Polls have shown Trump running a tight race against President Joe Biden, who is widely expected to be the Democratic standard bearer. At the moment, Trump is beating Biden by 0.7 percentage points in the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.

Notably, that includes a recent ABC-Washington Post poll showing Trump with a six-point lead. Some have described that as an outlier.

Sununu also ticked through his positions on key issues such as abortion, stating his opposition to a national ban; gun control, affirming his support for the Second Amendment; and the debt ceiling, warning that default would be “catastrophic.”

“We haven’t had a single debate yet. In fact, we won’t even have a debate for the next two or three months,” Sununu said, underscoring that it’s still early in the 2024 cycle. “I think there’s just a huge opportunity and a lot more political game to be played for candidates.”
