Former Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) said that he plans to make a decision on whether to run for president “very soon.”

“Look, the decision has to be made about my future sometime very soon,” Hurd told NBC’s Meet the Press. “I think the decision on anybody on what their future in politics [is] has to be done before Memorial Day.”

Hurd has toyed with running for president for a while, stressing the need to keep his options open. He attended the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Annual Spring Kick-off last month, a major cattle call for presidential aspirants.

The former congressman has been an outspoken critic of both Trump and President Joe Biden, who appear poised for a rematch of their 2020 election faceoff.

“The reality is two-thirds of Americans want somebody other than Donald Trump and Joe Biden. That’s like the rematch from hell, and nobody wants [that],” he said. “There’s better options out there.”

“That’s why we need to get more people voting in primaries. Only about 23% of the country actually votes in primaries. If we had more people voting in primaries, we’ll see better choices in November,” he added.

Many polls have not tested Hurd’s prospects in the 2024 arena. Trump has consistently reigned as the front-runner in the field, with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) polling as the second top contender, should he enter the race.

Hurd worked for the CIA for nine years, then served in the House from 2015 to 2021. At times, he was the only black member of the House GOP caucus.
