Actress Susan Sarandon arrested during minimum wage protest

Actress Susan Sarandon was arrested in New York while demonstrating in the name of raising the minimum wage.
Sarandon was blocking an entrance within the New York Capitol in Albany alongside One Fair Wage protesters. The group is comprised of 300,000 service workers and over 2,000 restaurant employers who advocate higher minimum wages. Many of its members gathered on Monday in protest of the state’s 2023-24 $229 billion spending plan that includes a minimum wage of $17 because it excludes tipped workers.

One reporter on the scene captured Sarandon being escorted away from the protest. The Twitter account for OFW posted photos of the protesters and confirmed that they “risked arrest.”

By 2 p.m., Sarandon’s fellow protester Camille Rivera tweeted a photo of the two together to confirm they had been released by Capitol police. Sarandon would go on to confirm to State of Politics that she was once a tipped worker and knows how “difficult” the industry can be.
