The latest guaranteed income program in California is anticipated to start in less than a month, and recipients of the program will get monthly payments of $500.

The yearlong program is intended to help mothers in the city of El Monte, which is home to more than 100,000 people. A total of 125 recipients were selected through a randomized lottery in April, and payments are anticipated to be sent out on June 1, a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.

“Individuals selected to participate in the program will be issued a debit card,” a city manager’s office representative told the Washington Examiner.

“Every month, the city will load $500 on the debit card. Individuals can use it to pay for goods and services at any location that accepts debit cards. The city will provide training on how to use the debit card for participants.”

To have been eligible, an applicant must have been living in El Monte, be a single female head of household with no spouse or partner in the house, and have children younger than 17. Applicants also had to verify their income was at or below the federal poverty line, be able to show a need for financial assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic, and be able to submit documents verifying school enrollment, proof of residency, and proof of income and a government-issued identification card.

Applications for this program opened on March 27 and remained open until April 15.

This guaranteed income program is one of several issuing payments to residents in California. In Sonoma County, recipients of the Pathway to Income Equity pilot program, who receive $500 every month, will receive their next payment on May 17, and another guaranteed income program, which pays recipients $800 every month, will send its next payment on May 15.
