Former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) slammed former President Donald Trump for embarking on a “vanity exercise” and denounced the prospects of a redo of the 2020 election.

“He’s on a vanity exercise to try to make himself feel better. That’s not going to make the country any better,” Christie said on 77 WABC. “That’s why I’m considering it because I’m concerned that the people that are in the race so far are unwilling to take him on directly.”

IF DESANTIS GETS IN, HIS FIRST TASK WILL BE STOPPING THE POLLING SLIDE

Once a key friend of Trump’s, Christie has since turned on him publicly and warned the Republican Party against nominating him as the standard bearer. Christie is actively mulling a 2024 run and has indicated a decision will come within the next two weeks.

From the sidelines, Christie has urged his fellow Republicans to take on Trump more directly and has unleashed a few swipes of his own. A key gripe against Trump has been the GOP’s string of losses since the former president first took office.

“Donald Trump has done nothing but lose since he won the election in 2016,” Christie stressed. “The only way to beat the front-runner is to take the front-runner on directly.”

Christie has also taken digs at Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), widely regarded as the second-place GOP contender in the 2024 arena. DeSantis has not yet declared his plans, but is expected to do so within the coming days.

Christie ran for president in 2016 but was unsuccessful in the 2016 GOP primary. He went on to endorse Trump after dropping out and advised him during his campaign and transition to the presidency. Polls have shown both Trump and Biden as the dominant candidates in their respective primaries.

“I’m very concerned that what we’re heading towards is a Trump-Biden rematch,” added.” “A Trump-Biden rematch is bad for the Republican Party.”

Christie has held a handful of town halls in New Hampshire as he tests the waters for a presidential run.

A recent Washington Post-ABC poll found that Trump tops Biden 44% to 38% when voters are asked whom they prefer for president. Most polls have generally shown Trump running tightly with Biden or trailing slightly.
