Whoopi Goldberg says Trump ‘is not the only’ Republican candidate

The View host Whoopi Goldberg criticized legacy media outlets for propping up 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump as the only Republican candidate.

Goldberg has long expressed her disdain for the former president, whom she does not refer to by name but by “you know who.” Yet, per her co-host Joy Behar, Trump is the “front-runner” for the Republican nominee for president. Trump has agreed to a CNN-produced town hall while toting a 40% lead in the polls, but he has scoffed at the idea of a debate. According to a clip of the former president played during The View on Thursday, “people don’t debate when they have these massive leads.”

“The media keeps saying he’s the only one, but he’s not. And the people who are going to make the decision about who becomes the next president? Not those people in the media. It’s the people sitting here,” Goldberg said. “I just want to always point out that while we talk about him a lot, he is not the only candidate on the Republican side, and the media tends to make it feel like it’s only him. And then, so people say, ‘Well, why should I go out and vote?'”

Fox News is slated to host the debate in August in Milwaukee, which will also host the 2024 Republican National Convention. Former Govs. Nikki Haley (R-SC) and Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are the other Republican candidates who have announced their campaigns as Republican candidates.

Goldberg criticized CNN’s choice to host a town hall for Trump during Wednesday’s show. During their discussion, she suggested that the audience members have a choice not to watch the town hall at all.

“The other sad thing to me is once you put this guy up, and you kind of say, ‘This is the front-runner,’ it seems like you’re saying, ‘And nobody else is going to be there,'” Goldberg said.

Meanwhile, a poll from last week reported that 47% of all voters do not approve of either Trump or Joe Biden for president. However, a majority of that group would pick Biden over the former president. In another recent poll, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) lost 9 percentage points in his approval rating, all while he has yet to announce his own candidacy.
