The Department of State is offering a $500,000 grant to teach children in Pakistan the English language, an initiative that also includes developing and promoting the nation’s young transgender population.

The grant would support English education for Pakistan’s youth so that they can find success in business and establish a position for themselves in the global marketplace, according to a report.

The State Department said the grant consists of three components, including training English teachers in institutions outside the mainstream and laying the groundwork for an environment of new English teachers in the country.

Part three, the section getting attention for its focus on transgender youth, will accept applicant proposals “for a minimum of $25,000 and a maximum of $75,000,” according to the State Department.

Applicants are suggested to discuss the measures they feel will be most effective in reaching the greatest number of Pakistani youth, the report noted.

Those who are accepted will be trained to work with transgender youth in Pakistan in “development courses” and guide other education officials and young professionals in the South Asian state, according to the report.

Educators who participate in the grant program will “share what they learned in these trainings with English-language professional colleagues, thereby influencing pedagogy in their schools and communities,” according to the State Department.

“In this specific grant, the Department provides funding for English-language learning, an integral skill that helps unlock educational and employability opportunities for marginalized communities, in this case transgender youth,” according to a State Department spokesperson.
