The governor will also tour a renewable fuels facility in the county.

This comes just days after the state approved a ban on the sale of new diesel big rig trucks. In the regulation advanced by the California Air Resources Board last week, large trucks used for local deliveries and government fleets, also referred to as “big rigs,” will be required to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035.

Further, garbage trucks are expected to be swapped out for zero-emission models by 2039. Other vehicles covered by the board’s regulation are expected to transition to zero-emission models by 2042.

The rule is known as Advanced Clean Fleets, and Newsom’s office touts the measure as the next step to “fully transitioning the medium and heavy-duty trucks that travel California roads to zero-emissions technology by 2045.”

“The future happens here first, and California is once again showing the world what real climate action looks like. Last year, our state approved one of the world’s first regulations requiring all new car sales to be zero emissions,” Newsom said. “Now, with these actions requiring all new heavy-duty truck sales to be zero emission and tackling train pollution in our state, we’re one step closer to achieving healthier neighborhoods and cleaner air for all Californians.”

The California governor’s push away from carbon-emitting vehicles aligns with those of President Joe Biden and his administration, who have made a concerted effort to transition Americans to electric vehicles.

Biden’s administration has been vocal about its goal of having 50% of all new vehicle sales be electric by 2030.

Last month, at the will of Biden, the Environmental Protection Agency unveiled new auto emissions rules meant to further this goal. The regulations, which the EPA said would be the “strongest-ever,” would apply to passenger vehicles from model year 2027 to 2032.

However, last week, the Senate passed a resolution to cancel the strict vehicle emissions rule. It passed by a 50-49 margin, and centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) joined his Republican colleagues on the measure.

This is the latest show of Democratic vulnerability in the Senate amid Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) extended absence.
