A super PAC promoting former President Donald Trump is rolling out a new ad ripping Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on entitlements.

The spot titled “Hat” depicts a man torn between a Trump and DeSantis hat. A narrator then accuses DeSantis of seeking to cut Social Security in the past, an attack line that has been espoused by Trump and has drawn mixed results from fact-checkers.

CLUB FOR GROWTH DINGS TRUMP FOR MIRRORING BIDEN ON SOCIAL SECURITY

“Did you know Ron DeSantis backed deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare?” the narrator said. “Yeah. He voted to cut Social Security or Medicare, not once, not twice, but three times. DeSantis even tried to raise the retirement age to 70.”

“I thought DeSantis was one of the good ones, but he’s just another career politician,” the man later concluded.

Make America Great Again Inc., a group launched by Trump’s allies last year, was credited for the ad. It is running on Fox News, CNN, and Newsmax, the Daily Caller reported.

During his tenure in Congress, DeSantis supported several Republican measures to reform entitlements, including raising the retirement age and tweaking Social Security’s cost-of-living increases. Recently, DeSantis stressed that “we’re not going to mess with Social Security as Republicans,” but Trump’s attacks have persisted.

In the 2018 race for governor, Adam Putnam’s campaign ads accusing DeSantis of voting “to cut Social Security and Medicare” drew a “half true” ranking from Politifact.

Trump warned Republicans they shouldn’t “cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security.” He has sporadically unleashed fire on DeSantis over entitlements. The governor has yet to declare a 2024 bid but has polled as Trump’s top rival.

“Social Security and Medicare, and Ron’s attack on both, have destroyed DeSanctimonious. His love affair with Jeb Bush and Karl Rove, certainly haven’t helped, but being a DISCIPLE of ‘Wheelchair over the Cliff’ Paul Ryan, has been a disaster!” Trump recently wrote on Truth Social.
