Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts’s decision to decline to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) had invited Roberts to a May 2 hearing on Supreme Court ethics reform, which he declined on Tuesday. Ocasio-Cortez bashed Roberts’s decision as threatening the Supreme Court’s legitimacy, claiming that by refusing to appear before Congress, he was avoiding accountability.
“Under Roberts, the Supreme Court has unraveled constitutional rights and seen several justices engage in corrupt financial arrangements. Now he is refusing to answer questions,” she tweeted. “How does Roberts expect SCOTUS to maintain authority if they reject accountability themselves?”

Ocasio-Cortez has questioned the Supreme Court’s legitimacy on multiple occasions after reports emerged that Justice Clarence Thomas received gifts that were not disclosed to the public. She demanded that Thomas be impeached over the matter.

“This is beyond party or partisanship. This degree of corruption is shocking – almost cartoonish. Thomas must be impeached,” she tweeted earlier in April. “Barring some dramatic change, this is what the Roberts court will be known for: rank corruption, erosion of democracy, and the stripping of human rights.”

Thomas has come under significant criticism for his failure to disclose that he was receiving lavish gifts and vacations from a wealthy friend.
