Republicans were quick to greet President Joe Biden’s early morning reelection campaign debut with warnings about what a second term would mean.

As the GOP unified in opposition, Democrats largely coalesced around the incumbent president, with a handful of prominent liberals arguing Biden needs to tack further to the left to win their support.

BIDEN LAUNCHES 2024 PRESIDENTIAL REELECTION BID

“You could take the five worst presidents in American history, and put them together, and they would not have done the damage Joe Biden has done to our Nation in just a few short years. Not even close,” former President Donald Trump wrote in a statement. “Thanks to Joe Biden’s socialist spending calamity, American families are being decimated by the worst inflation in half a century.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) used the news of Biden’s reelection campaign launch to blast him for his refusal to negotiate over the debt ceiling. The two have long been at loggerheads over the debt limit, which is projected to risk default between June and August, according to several projections.

“I know President Biden might be focused on his own political future today, but he should be focused on the future of America. Biden should have announced he will finally come to the table and negotiate a responsible debt limit increase to avoid the first default in our history,” McCarthy tweeted.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel cited a recent NBC poll that found nearly 70% of voters don’t want Biden to pursue another term in office. The poll also found that about 60% of voters didn’t want Trump to run for reelection. Trump declared last November.

“70% of Americans think Joe Biden should NOT run for reelection. We see through his lies. We know his destructive agenda means more inflation, lower wages, higher crime rates, a worsening fentanyl crisis, and failing schools,” McDaniel tweeted.

The RNC also released a quick video response to Biden, slamming him on a range of policy fronts, such as the economy, immigration, crime, and relations with China.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) tore into Biden’s roughly three-minute campaign launch video, panning his remarks criticizing the GOP on Social Security and abortion. Biden’s announcement video featured footage of Greene making an outburst at his State of the Union address.

“Shame on Joe Biden for lying and selfishly deciding to run for re-election just as we are exposing how the Bidens have gotten rich by influence peddling,” Greene tweeted. “Joe himself has already proven he’s the worst president in history, now we have to prove how corrupt Joe Biden really is.”

Meanwhile, Democrats quickly rallied around Biden for the most part, touting his achievements during his first term.

“I am thrilled that @POTUS and @VP have announced their run for reelection — and the Democratic Party is fully behind them. Biden is the most accomplished president in my lifetime. He has already delivered so much for the American people — now it’s time to finish the job,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison tweeted.

“I’m proudly supporting President Biden for reelection. He is the clear leader for this moment, and his record over the first two years of his presidency is extraordinary. I’ll be doing everything I can to keep him and Vice President Harris in the White House to finish the job,” activist Charlotte Clymer tweeted.

“President Biden is officially running for reelection. I support him with every ounce of my soul. I’ve seen firsthand his incredible kindness & bottomless humanity. Trump is the greatest threat to our country & the free world. This is not a tough call. Biden is the bastion we need,” political strategist Lindy Li tweeted.

The Sunrise Movement, which advocates climate change policy, appeared to imply that Biden has more work to do if he wants to energize young voters.

“President Biden just announced his bid for reelection. If he wants to win, he must energize the young voters who have been carrying the Democratic Party since 2018. He can’t take our generation for granted,” the group wrote. “That means President Biden must follow through on his climate goals, declare a climate emergency, and do everything he can.”

Biden’s soft rollout of his reelection campaign launch had been rumored for days and comes on the fourth anniversary of his 2019 campaign launch for the 2020 cycle.

He is facing a small primary challenge from bestselling author Marianne Williamson and environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., though he is trouncing them by wide margins in polling. His 2020 general election foe, Trump, is leading the pack on the Republican side, laying the groundwork for a possible rematch.
